GENEALOGICAL DRESS
1997, Exhibition Les Presents Relatifs, Contemporary Art Centre, Reuil, France
“It hangs by a thread.”
“Disturbingly strange, cut hair can be a source of fascination. It offers up itself to a passionate ritual and becomes a liturgical object. Braided into a genealogical dress, it combines mothers with daughters in a delicate gradation, an exposed shell. It forms strips on a wax column and becomes Cinderella shoe; worn like a pendant it becomes a relic, jewellery or a painting.
The universe of Frédérique Decombe is entirely in symbols, a survival from our primitive state that she glorifies. Our hair belongs to her. In her hands it is immortal.”
